I spent most of my career building businesses. But over the last 35 years, I have met with hundreds and hundreds of founders. Peer groups. Conferences. Whiteboard sessions. Coffee shops.
I lost count of how many times I heard the same sentence.
"We hired a marketing company. Spent $50K. Got nothing for it."
It was always a different city. A different founder. A different industry. Same dollar figure, give or take. Same conclusion.
For years it just bothered me. Then it started to feel like waste at a much bigger scale. Great products that never reached the people who needed them. Founders who built something real and never got paid for what they built. All because the marketing piece never came together.
The pattern was the same every time. A founder with a clear vision. Money they were willing to spend. A specialist they handed it to. And nobody in the middle.
Nobody drew the blueprint.
